Description
Ardo nipple shield. A nipple shield is a nipple-shaped sheath worn over the areola and nipple during breastfeeding. Modern nipple shields are made of soft, thin, flexible silicone and have holes at the end of the nipple section to allow the breast milk to pass through.
Using an Ardo nipple shield incorrectly may reduce milk supply. Breastfeeding correctly causes your body to make hormones that keep up your milk supply.
Babies can become very obsessed with the nipple shield, so sometimes it can be challenging to wean them from it. This is why you always want to have an exit strategy. If you are using the nipple shield as a temporary band-aid while your nipples heal, try to use it for only a few days and maybe not for every feeding.
This creates a little bit of suction which helps the shield stay in place.
Many babies have suddenly stopped using them at two, four or six months of age or older. And some mothers have just carried on using the nipple shields. Nipple shields are not the end of the world if your baby is able to transfer milk and is gaining weight well.
If your nipple measures 16 mm in diameter, your recommended breast shield size is 21 mm because the 21 mm shield fits nipples up to 17 mm in diameter. If your nipple diameter measures 24 mm, your recommended size would be 30 mm.
